Culture and Self Paper
Assignment Description
Have you ever wondered why other people behave the way they do? It may have something to
do with their personality or it may have something to do with their nationality. You need not
even travel abroad. We live in a such a diverse society. Be confident the research you do for this
presentation will help your classmates be more effective during interactions in the future.
The purpose of this assignment is for you to compare / contrast American Culture and Somail
ethnic co-culture in a three to four page paper. Support your claims with reasons and evidence–
like quotes or statistics from experts like Edward Hall and Geert Hofstede among others.
This assignment will have three main parts:
 First, compare / contrast American Culture and your own ethic co-culture using one of
Hofstede’s Five Cultural Dimensions and / or Hall’s Three Cultural Dimensions.
 Second, repeat the process using another one of Hofstede’s or Hall’s dimensions of culture.
 Finally, make at least five recommendations for interacting with someone from your ethnic
co-culture.
Let’s return to a discussion of the assignment’s first main part.
Comparing / Contrasting Cultures
In the first main point, compare / contrast American Culture and your own ethnic co-culture —
using one of Geert Hofstede’s Five Cultural Dimensions or Edward T. Hall’s Three Cultural
Factors. You may choose from:
Hall’s Three Cultural Dimensions
 Monochronic and Polychronic: time is seen as a finite quantity or infinite?
 High Context and Low Context: whether language is expected to be explicit or subtle?
Direct or indirect? Formal or informal?
 Territoriality: value ownership, boundaries, and space?
 Visit http://changingminds.org/explanations/culture/hall culture.html to help
with research.
AND /OR
Hofstede’s Five Cultural Dimensions
 Individualism and Collectivism: emphasis on the individual or group?
 Masculinity and Femininity: traditional masculine or feminine values are promoted?
 High and Low Power Distance: power widely or narrowly distributed among people.
How important are hierarchy, family social status, and wealth?
 Uncertainty Avoidance: welcome or shy away from uncertainty. How important are
laws, rules, and guidelines in the culture?
 Time Orientation (Short and Long Term): resources to be used now or preserved for the
future and future generations?
 Indulgence
 Visit http://geert-hofstede.com.html to help with your research.
Each main point must include the following:
 Define each term– if it may be misunderstood by your audience.
 State your opinion (claim) regarding where your /other culture fits.
 Provide a reason why you think this is the true? “Because __________.”
 Support your claim using evidence like quotes and statistics from experts like Hall,
Hofstede, or others.*
 Transition to the next main point when finished.
* Support with evidence: statistics, quotations from a respected authority (give source,
qualifications, and dates). Provide page number if you use a quotation. Vary the kinds of
evidence used. If you do all of the above, you have made a valid argument. Now, let’s discuss
the second main point.
Comparing / Contrasting Cultures
In your second main point, repeat the process above by comparing / contrasting another one of
Hofstede’s or Hall’s Dimensions. That completes my discussion of the assignment’s second main
point. Next, let’s move on to my discussion of the assignment’s third main point.
Recommendations for Communicating with Another’s Culture
Finally, in the third main point, make at six recommendations for a successful initial interaction
with someone from your ethic co-culture. Following are some sample questions you may wish to
answer:
 What word(s) should I use to say “hello” and “good bye?
 What nonverbal behaviors should I use? Make eye contact or not? Shake hands. Bow?
Are there any specific gestures I should avoid?
 What other words might I need to know? How do I say “please”? How do I say “thank
you”?
 Where would it be okay to meet? A coffee shop? A bar? Why?
 What topic might be safe or the best to start conversation with? Weather? Health?
Family? What topics might be off limits in our first meeting?
Visit http://www.kwintessential.co.uk/resources/global-etiquette to help with your research.
That completes my discussion of the assignment’s third main point. Now let’s move on to my
conclusion.
In review, remember this assignment had three main parts.
 First, compare / contrast American Culture and your own ethic co-culture using one of
Hofstede’s Five Cultural Dimensions and/or Hall’s Three Cultural Dimensions.
 Second, repeat the process using one other one of Hofstede’s or Hall’s dimensions of
culture.
 Finally, make six recommendations for interacting with someone from that culture.
In conclusion, recall the purpose of this assignment is for you to compare / contrast American
Culture and your own ethic co-culture in a four to five page paper.
Have you ever wondered why other people behave the way they do? It may have something to
do with their personality or it may have something to do with their nationality. You need not
even travel abroad. We live in a such a diverse society. Be confident the research you do for this
presentation will help your classmates be more effective during interactions in the future.
References Slide and Other Slides
You may use your textbook as one reference, but you must use at least three references other
than your textbook, encyclopedias, and dictionaries. Consider using:
 Interview with someone from another’s culture.
 Book or periodical (reputable newspaper or magazine) research article from library
 Internet research (website) except Wikipedia, encyclopedias, and dictionaries
A Works Cited page should be included and the end of the paper
References should be stated and cited when used during the presentation and be included on
each slide using the APA writing format. FYI. Microsoft Word 2007 and beyond formats citations
for most sources. Click on References, Manage Sources, and then New (make sure Style is set to
APA) if unsure. For help with APA Style Reference Citations visit this online resource:

Thread Prompt:
For this discussion, you are the administrator of a large hospital. It has come to your attention that one of your surgeons tells lewd jokes and makes suggestive comments to the surgical support staff. You have heard that some of the surgical nurses may quit because the surgeon’s behavior makes them so uncomfortable that they dread coming to work. Although your hospital has a procedure in place to report incidents such as these, no one has used the procedure to make a formal report of this surgeon’s actions to hospital management.
Is the surgeon’s behavior harassment? If so, can your hospital be held legally liable for the surgeon’s actions?
How would you respond to the situation?
Issues to consider include Title VII definitions of harassment; requirements to file with the EEOC; respondeat superior liability for your employees’ actions; does liability change if someone uses the reporting procedures.
