Altruism is one of the hallmarks of primate behavior. According to scientists, primates are more likely to perform altruistic acts if they benefit their close relatives, or kin. This is the premise behind the term “kin selection.” Please describe kin selection in primate societies in greater detail. Do you think humans operate the same way? Are you more likely to do something selfless for your family than for non-family? What is your motivation for doing so? Please define sexual selection and sexual dimorphism. Why is sexual dimorphism more pronounced within primate societies with high levels of mate competition than among monogamous, or pair-bonded, primate species? Your book discusses 6 typical residence patterns for non-human primates. How many of them (if any) do humans exhibit? Please explain your answer briefly. You’ve seen lots of examples of primate behaviors in the various videos assigned this week. Describe one behavior that surprised you. Describe one behavior that reminded you of something we humans would do in a similar situation. Describe one other primate behavior of your choice that made an impression on you and tell me why.
