you are required to submit a reflection of the course
contents that critically reflects, analyzes, and draws connections between themes highlighted in the course
reading and the provided research articles. In other words, I do not want you to give me a page-by-page
summary of a book. Critical reflection assignments are those in which you connect key ideas and
concepts from the chapters, reflect on their importance to the theory, research, or practice of juvenile justice,
their relevance for specific actors in the juvenile justice system, and make connections to the real world outside
of the classroom.
analyze and evaluate taken for granted knowledge about crime
and justice and think through the theoretical or policy implications of each author’s work.
apply and synthesize information rather than summarize information. The minimum word count for critical reflection assignments is 400 words. All assignments must
contain appropriate in-text citations and a reference section in APA style.
Some questions you may ask yourself as you are writing to help guide are located below. This is not a
complete list, nor should you try and answer every question in every assignment.
What are the most important ideas from these readings/chapters? Why are they the most important? How
could they be elaborated more thoroughly in future research? What do we, as professionals and students of juvenile justice, stand to learn from this information or
material? How do we disseminate this information to stakeholders (e.g. police)?
Why is this material relevant to the study of juvenile justice? How do we emphasize the greatest points of
importance from the reading to relevant groups (e.g. teachers or politicians)? What are the implications of this author’s argument in this section? How are those implications different for
different groups of people?
How would we take what we have learned in this reading/chapter and apply it to the ‘real world’? What
problems would we have with implementation?
What concepts related to social structure are highlighted in these readings? How does this reading
demonstrate individuals with agency who are constrained by patterns of social structure outside of their
control (e.g. patterns of gender arrangements in society)?
To what extent does this fit with the common perception of crime and justice key social statuses like race
and gender? What are the first steps in changing those perceptions? Why does it matter that we change
those perceptions?
How do these ideas compare to other ideas presented in the course through other readings and materials?
Which would be more helpful in teaching this material to others, or what other materials would you include
alongside the reading(s) to further support the major points?
How can this concept cut across situations and be helpful in affecting positive social change in relation to
an existing social problem (e.g. substance use)? Would that effect be differential, based on things like
urbanicity vs. rurality? What about for adolescents vs. adults?
Whether and to what extent are there differences, discontinuities, or things this author (reading) and
another author (reading) disagree about? Why are these differences meaningful? Which person should we
listen to based on your expert understanding of the reading(s)?
To what extent does the reading demonstrate bias in its methods, findings, or results? How can these be
improved in future research? What other groups would benefit from a similar study conducted with them?
What might that find that is different?
What might future research based on what was learned in this section look like? How can we learn more
about this concept as social scientists? Would quantitative or qualitative methodologies work better? Why?
How do we best capture this specific population for social scientific study?
What are some questions the author(s) did not ask that should have been asked? Why are these as or
more relevant than what the author selected? How might the findings be different today from when this
book (reading) was published?

As with law enforcement and court personnel, corrections and probation and parol

As with law enforcement and court personnel, corrections and probation and parole officers are held to a high ethical standard. Corrections and probation and parole agencies must be diligent in their efforts to address acts of malfeasance.
You are assigned to a conduct review board at your agency. The head of your department has instructed each of you to collaborate to review three officers’ conduct issues. You must determine if the conduct engaged in by each of the officers in the scenario is ethical or unethical. Following the determination, you must designate a committee decision and outcome for the officer- involved incident. Each of the officers involved have agreed to a committee review of their action set and will abide by the committee’s findings. Please follow the action steps that follow to guide the committee’s recommendation:
1.) Determine the incident’s classification:
1. No misconduct
2.Misconduct but excusable
3. Minor misconduct
4. Intentional misconduct
5. Major misconduct (conduct unbecoming an officer)
2.) Justify the classification. The designations are progressive in their level of malfeasance. Your rationale should be well detailed and supported. Use the textbook and other credible outside research sources to support your rationale. All components of the events and actions are to be examined and evaluated.
3.) Make a recommendation regarding officer discipline or lack thereof and justify the punishment by explaining the committee’s findings and their reasoning for recommending the discipline.
Use the matrix below to assist in the assignment of consequence:
No misconduct — No punishment
Misconduct but excusable — May include a 1-year counseling letter in the officer’s personnel file. Retraining may be required.
Minor misconduct — 1- to 5-year discipline letter in officer’s personnel file. 1- to 6-month suspension from specialty assignment (SWAT, detectives, marine unit, honor guard, field training officer, etc.). Includes loss of specialty pay for the assignment. Retraining may be required.
Intentional misconduct — Suspension for up to 30 days without pay. Reassignment from specialty unit (SWAT, detectives, marine unit, honor guard, field training officer, etc.). Demotion from rank to former rank (i.e., corporal to officer, sergeant to officer, lieutenant to sergeant). Permanent discipline letter in officer’s personnel file. Training mandated.
Major misconduct (conduct unbecoming an officer) — Suspension for up to 1 year unpaid. Last chance agreement letter (states that any similar misconduct will result in immediate termination) or termination.
4.) Evaluate what type of corruption is presented in each of the incidents (noble cause, structural or affiliation hypothesis, rotten apples/rotten barrels, and /or “slippery slope”). Recommend strategies to control this type of corruption and also ways and means to prevent further instances. How could the agency avoid this behavior (training, policy and procedure, greater supervision, support of “whistleblowers”)?
Your final essay should thoroughly document the committee’s finding and associated recommendation set. This essay should be 3–5 pages in length and use at least two credible outside research sources, including academic journals, to support your view.

Topic 2 Concepts Prompts:
Compare and contrast the UCR and NCVS as sources of information about delinquency and crime. The NCVS is clearly better positioned to measure the dark figure (dark horse) of crime, or crime that goes unmeasured in official reporting statistics. Identify and evaluate at least two substantive changes to the NCVS that you would consider as helpful in increasing reporting and reducing the dark figure of crime. Be sure and consider any negative consequences or ramifications of the changes you suggest. Changes can be to the reporting methodology, collection techniques, sampling, items measured, and still other things.
Theories of crime are broad in scope and have varying amounts of evidentiary support in the literature. Evaluate the strengths and limitations of two psychological explanations of crime and explain which would be better at examining juvenile gang membership. Then, evaluate the strengths and limitations of two sociological explanations of crime and explain which would be better at examining juvenile gang membership. Broadly, which of these explanations is the most persuasive to you in terms of evidence provided? Consider another type of delinquency of your choosing which you believe best represents the theory you found most persuasive. In other words, what would the perfect example case be for this theory to demonstrate it works?

Write a five (5) page minimum, DOUBLE SPACED, 12-FONT TIMES ROMAN paper with references and sources cited in APA format. Your cover sheet, abstract and your source citing/references are NOT included in the five page minimum.
Your grade will depend upon the presentation of your analysis and research, the quality of the work presented – whether you give a detailed presentation or a vague overview, whether you addressed all parts of the question asked, and how you support your argument/discussion – as well as the citing of a variety of sources/use of references and whether you met the mandatory minimum page requirement. Please make sure to use AT LEAST 5 sources for your research.
The paper should be written using APA Format. Please make sure you review your paper for spelling, grammar, and format and plagiarism errors before submitting it. Remember that the paper should be typed in Microsoft Word and submitted as an attachment. Your paper will not receive a grade until it is submitted properly. If you need assistance, please let me know.
It is recommended that you use the Keiser Owl Writing Lab to assist you with editing and revising your paper before turning it in.
Please note that APA format requires a cover/title page and a reference page. These do not count toward your 5 page minimum.
You may make your presentation in essay form, though the use of some tables might be helpful. I would expect this project to be 5 pages in length, double spaced
