Epistemic Modals:
We discussed epistemic modality and how it fits with the centered-worlds quantification treatment of attitude predicates. As a reminder, please explain in your own words what the difference is between the interpretation of the models in the following two sentences and what this difference is due to.
(5)
a. Gali might be happy.
b. Tali thinks Gali might be happy.
Now, consider the famous example (6) from Egan et al. What meaning do we obtain for the modal sentence in the antecedent of the conditional sentence? Is this predicted by what we said in class? If not, could one modify what we said for it to be predicted (how), or add some appropriate assumptions about the other elements in the sentence (what)?
(6)
[A military instructor is telling his troops about how to prepare for jungle warfare:] Before you walk into an area where there are lots of high trees, if there might be snipers hiding in the branches, you should clear away the foliage with flamethrowers.

1) Summarize in 2-3 paragraphs the central question the film (Guns Germs And Steel) addresses.
2) What predictors of the geographic distribution of ethnic groups are mentioned in the film? Specifically, what claims are made about the east-west versus north-south expansions?
3) Make an educated guess in what contexts Diamond’s hypothesis of geographic determinism figures in areal linguistic research?

Format: Papers must be at least double-spaced and max 4-5 pages in length. It must have a title, your name, page numbering, and consistent use of citations/references. Proofreading for grammatical errors is expected and plays a role in the evaluation of papers. Make sure that your paper is in the form of an essay with an introduction, body and conclusion.
Write a double spaced paper (5-6 pages maximum) in which:
• You compare your four language observation projects.
• You highlight which one you enjoyed the most and which one the least and explain why.
Note to the writer I am attaching my four-language observation projects please go through them before writing the paper. The one I enjoyed the most is bilingualism and least one I likes is the Language and Gender.

This assignment requires a basic familiarity with such notions as sample, statistical population, and variable. If they are unfamiliar to you, read a short summary in the attached file BasicConcepts.pdf
Read section 3.2 on “Hypotheses and operationalization”, attached as well, from Gries’s (2013) chapter 1. (The file also contains sections 2 and 3.1 of the chapter which are useful but not obligatory.)
Revisit the article from Lan-fen Huang we discussed last week.
On the basis of the research questions and topics it addresses pick one aspect and formulate H0 and H1 both in words and using the mathematical form (it does not have to be exactly the same hypothesis the paper tests, rather, consider the article as an inspiration to the generation of your own hypothesis).
The focus is on the correct formulation of a statistical hypothesis and less so on the content!

Read the short article by Bickel & Nichols (2006) Oceania, the Pacific Rim, and the theory of linguistic areas. Answer the following questions.
1) What problems are presented by variable-defined areas according to the article? Does this criticism apply to “your” adopted area and the procedures implemented by the authors who worked on “your” area?
2) Which variables were initially observed to be remarkably frequent in the Pacific Rim area?
3) Which non-linguistic reasons are there to group the Pacific Rim as one area?
4) What is the difference between the Pacific Rim area and the Circum-Pacific area? Which are was tested in the end? Why?
5) Which kind of typological sampling/stratification was used for the survey?
6) Which statistical methods were used to test the claim that the Circum-Pacific is an area?
